"More of a Toy than a Tool" 2010-09-28

I bought this wrench to help me change the front brake rotors on my truck, which involved loosening some 19mm bolts. The description said "class leading torque" and "an incredible 1,950 in./lbs. of torque for tightening and loosening the most stubborn nuts, and hex-head bolts and screws" so imagine my surprise when I found out it couldn't do the job that a 2 foot breaker bar did in no time. Sure, maybe it has more torque than the little Skil cordless wrench I got at Walmart for $25, but not by much. At first I thought maybe the one I received was broken, but some of the other reviewers also complained about the lack of torque. Also the slight burning plastic smell it produced whenever I tried to use it was a little disconcerting, even if it is normal. I will be returning this so-called "tool" for a refund.

i work for and engineering company and i often times have to take out fasteners from failing structures, i compared this impact wrench to a non battery powered impact wrench and this one did as good or better at times. battery life is really long and i could not wear one out before the other was charged.

this is the best tool i have purchased in a long time.

On my 4th year of owning this Impact and love it. The NiMH batteries are starting to die on me. Downside is the replacement batteries cost 40-120 dollars for these, but it will use the Li-on batery as well.

Mine is the older version with the Ni-Mh, but had to put a review here too. Awesome impact flat tire on my 3/4 ton truck, 8-lugs, a breeze with this impact. Bought another Hitachi Hammer Drill with Li-ion battery and hate to use my Ni-Mh the weight difference is out of this world...

Whoa....size does matter! Small, compact, lightweight size in this instance. If you want a cordless impact wrench...you've gotta try this baby! I can hardly believe the power it has for such a small tool! I work at a wrecking yard driving fork lift, and pull and park an average of 30-40 vehicles a day. I have had my Hitachi impact for almost a year now and I use it 5 days a week to remove wheels from many of these cars and trucks among other tasks. Then I bring it home on weekends in case I have any tasks at home that I might want use it for....it's a tool I just don't like to be without in case I have a wrenching job! I am a mechanical guy and work on cars, appliances, and about anything else that I can fix myself.

I have owned several impact wrenches. I've had a few cheap ones that I won't bother to talk about. Previous to my Hitachi, I had a Goodyear Racing impact wrench. I liked it and it did a good job, but it was heavy, clumsy, and pretty much designed just for using on lug nuts. The batteries also didn't last a long time on a charge and deteriorated a little each time they were recharged requiring replacement after about 6 months. Finally, my charger went belly up as it fried my last battery, so, I went shopping for a new impact wrench as I really need to have a cordless impact on my job.

First I bought a Makita impact wrench thinking that would be the answer. It was lithium-ion, so that solved the battery problem to a great degree, but what a monster. Again, big and heavy and clumsy, and I don't think it was as powerful as my Goodyear Racing impact gun....I quickly returned this puppy.

Then I tried the Hitachi WR18DL....and let me tell you.....this baby smokes! Very light and small and easy to handle but has lots of power and 2 speed settings and was about the same price as the Makita. It is super fast for removing or installing bolts and nuts of all kinds and sizes. It won't do like 1 ton trucks and once in a while at work I will get a lug nut that is so tight that it won't break it loose and I have to break the nut with a fourway by hand. That said, she goes thru 95% of the lug nuts and anything else I have tried without breakin' a sweat.

This little Hitachi impact makes every job that involves wrenching fast and easy and a pleasure to do. As another reviewer said, and I concur, "I actually look forward to using this tool". I have two 3.0 amp hour batteries that I use and they do a great job and last a long time on a charge.

In conclusion....yeah....you can buy a more powerful impact (just double the price and weight), but when you consider size....weight....power and price combined....I don't think you can beat this little impact wrench with anything else on the market! Just a note, if you're shopping for an impact wrench, make sure its an impact wrench your looking at and not an impact driver.....totally different tools.

I am a satisified customer of this impact from Hitachi and was happy to do a review of this tool.

I was skeptical at first, being that this unit was so light weight, until the first time I used it.

It took off the lug nuts on a 2008 Crown Vic with no problem!

I was disappointed though, when using with the scissor jack, it didn't have the torque to raise the car like previous

impacts I've owned.

I works great with the Porter-Cable PTA9 1/2-Inch SAE Deep Impact sockets I purchased!

I originally bought this product to take something off, rather than put something on. Being older, having some physical weakness and having no help made me uneasy thinking of using a pipe as a breaker bar (on a wrench) to remove a connection from my water heater. The WH18DL made the job effortless. It is lighter than a 9 volt NiCad Dewalt drill and POWERFUL. Since that project, I bought torque sticks to use with the WH18DL for tightening lug nuts and mower blade bolts. I keep it in the truck, in case of a flat, it makes changing a tire almost a pleasure.

Hitachi WH18DL 18-volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Impact Driver

Just finished screwing a wooden storage shed together using the Hitachi WH18DL Impact Driver. What a great tool! It drove lag bolts and all different length deck screws with no loss of power. My son and I agree that it was actually easier to screw the shed together than nail it.

Right off the bat, I had to screw the 2x6 floor joists to the side 2x6 using 5/16" x 4" lag bolts. Not having an adapter to use a socket over the bolt heads, I screwed about 10 screws in by hand using a ratchet. What a chore that was. Fortunately it was the end of the day so I stopped but my wrist was a bit sore. The next morning I bought an adapter that allows using standard 3/8" sockets with this impact driver. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Driving the rest of the lag bolts was fast and powerful with no strain. Saved my wrist for sure! Buy a 3/8" socket adapter as soon as you buy this impact driver!

One tip I found regarding using an impact driver while building the shed. Be sure to have some Irwin quick clamps or similar handy. We clamped 2x4 framing pieces to hold them tightly together before driving the screws. This held the pieces exactly where we wanted them and unlike nailing where the piece being nailed or the back piece needs support, driving the screws was so fast and easy.

The first battery was usually discharged by about 2 pm and the second battery covered the rest of the day. But even with heavier use, it takes about 30 minutes to recharge a battery so two batteries can keep you going. The WH18DL is a terrific impact driver.

This is the best cordless impact driver on the market! I have tried all the other major brands and I still like my Hitachi the best.

I do commercial interior and exterior steel framing and use my Hitachi every day, all day. I use this driver so much I have an enormous, thick, half-circle callous between my finger and thumb and another on my trigger finger. This thing has never faltered or let me down. I have dropped it off of ladders and out of lifts, bumped it on everything, covered it in caulk, worked outside in all weather, and crammed it into spaces that were way too small and it still performs like new after over a year of use. On some days I will go through more than four batteries, all without a hiccup.

I like the ergonomics. Most other brands have a grip that tapers towards the bottom . The Hitachi is fat at the bottom and tapers at the top. This keeps the web of your hand close in line with the shaft axis meaning more power transfer from your arm and less fatigue during extended use.

For those that worry about the funny color scheme, don't. If you actually use it, it will get dirty and scratched and look just as manly as any other tool in your box. The durability of the exterior is excellent. Just as good or better than any other brand.

There is no body mounted light, which would be nice. But, the light on the hook does provide light when one finds himself building a building in the dark.

The hook is a wonderful feature. FAST, FAST, FAST! Especially when hooked to the front pocket of your jeans. In the hand, hit the screws, back on the pocket with amazing speed. It does take some time to get used to the hook, especially with quick transitions to the off-hand, but the speed and convenience of the hook more than make up for it. Another good feature of the gun mounted hook is you can carry it without your tool belt. This is very handy on fast-attack missions where only the necessary tools are carried in your pockets.

The case is very nice. Large and briefcase style, it has room for shafts up to 12", lots of extra bits and pieces, a couple of three-way plugs, and there is still room for a pocket laser or maybe a light lunch. Everything has its place and it's obvious where everything goes so roll-up is fast. Have you ever tried to figure out how everything is supposed to fit into a De Walt case? Not fun, and also not a problem with the Hitachi.

The batteries also lock into the gun with a very positive feel. You know when the battery is locked in or not, and when it's in it's solid. I can't say the same thing about some other (yellow) brands. No accidentally dropped batteries yet. The batteries are also set up to minimize the chance of fire if you are unwise enough to toss one in your screw bag. The yellow brand is notorious for this.

The price on the Hitachi is usually less than any other "real" heavy duty impact driver. Saving money is a good thing. Saving money and getting something of higher quality is even better.

The batteries last a long time, and they charge quick. The charger is solidly built and works just fine sitting in the case. The low battery cut-off is a GREAT FEATURE. It is not a liability like some others have posted. It saves your expensive batteries from being ruined. Sure, YOU might know that you should change a battery when it gets low, but that guy you loaned your gun to doesn't know. He probably wouldn't care even if he did know! The battery cut-off circuit has got you covered.

Yes, the De Walt is more expensive, has a big name, and is yellow. The Hitachi is still better with.....everything.

The Makita is smaller and, depending on batteries, can be lighter. The Hitachi is still better with more power, battery life, durability, and ergonomics. The Hitachi isn't exactly big and heavy either. Remember, it lives on my pocket.

When I need to get a replacement gun it will without a doubt be a Hitachi.

As a dinosaur who's gone to great efforts to avoid buying cordless tools and/or anything made in China I finally succumbed after reading the latest Fine Homebuilding and Amazon customer reviews. I have a bunch of summer outdoor wood projects stacking up and decided to go cordless for the portability. I give the Hitachi 5 stars for fit and finish with solid construction and a rubberized outer cover to absorb shocks and bumps. The collet type chuck is easy to operate and the small size and light weight of this thing are truly amazing! The forward/reverse switch is a simple finger/thumb operation. While I haven't needed the light yet it can be aimed at the work so that could be handy when you're finishing up that last few pieces in the dark or under a cabinet. Stainless fasteners definitely need pre-drilling as three inchers will go right to the end before the head pops off! I switched to star drive coated steel and haven't had a problem since. As for the color scheme, I love it. You definitely won't get it confused with those "other" brands on the jobsite. And if it somehow disappeared I would definitely replace it with the same model!

The BTD141 is a 2008 update/improved version of the BTD140. Not much difference but some improved internal parts (slightly higher max torque), slightly different appearance (mainly the plastic gearbox shroud), and a different chuck. This chuck allows you to push in a hex bit without pulling out the sleeve.

Just my luck; a week after I bought this, Makita comes out with the revolutionary Makita BTD144 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Impact Driver with brushless motor. There is a reason why the BTD144 is the first tool in the Makita line-up to get the brushless technology: Impact drivers are known for their torque but not for their finesse. With the electronic speed & power control that brushless motors allow, you can have buttons that reduce the torque instead of having to feather the trigger pressure(like you have to do on the BTD141). Even though it is $100 more than the BTD141, I would have probably sprung for the BTD144.

Regardless, the BTD141 has loads of potential torque and if you are not careful/skilled you can torque fasteners way beyond where they should be. I needed some practice with the trigger and doing short bursts to make a 3" screw flush with a wood surface. Getting the right pressure on the trigger as you are driving a screw does not come naturally.

The ergonomics on this, as with all Makita LXT tools, is superb. Very comfortable even after 2hrs. of continuous use.

It is loud, but it's supposed to be loud; it's an IMPACT driver.

You can use this driver with the smaller 1.5 amp Makita batteries without making any modifications. (See user picture above) Thus, it can virtually become the smaller, lighter BTD142HW.

The case that came with it from Amazon was very large and had space for a Makita hammer drill. This worked out for me since I got a free hammer drill (BHP454Z) through a mail-in rebate promotion when I bought this. The case might be too big for your liking if Amazon is still shipping it with this case.

I recently bought the LXT211 kit from Home Depot for $225 ($75 off for tool purchase over $300). Home Depot's normal price for the LXT211. The LXT211 includes this tool and the BHP452 (18v hammer drill). It also includes 2 3.0Ah batteries. So the obvious question is where the heck does Amazon come by these prices? There's no way the original price is currently (possibly ever) as stated. Come on Amazon - this seems dishonest.

I purchases this impact after using one of the 1.5v units on a job and loved it. this one being the 3v model is considerably more powerful. I took it out for a trial test and drove a 4" wood screw through a seasoned fence post, and the impact didn't even seem like it was working hard at all.

It's a well engineered tool and fits your hand like a glove. Much better than others I have had in the past. you can't go wrong with this kit. Mentioned it to a friend and bought one here also and is amazed at the power and versatility of it. You can't go wrong with this one!

A great all around tool. It's nice to be able to change from a drill bit to a screw driver one handed. As a driver it makes easy work of driving 3-1/2" screws into 2x4's. It's lightweight but powerfull enough to get any job done. Another nice feature is that the batteries last longer than most other cordless drills and it charges quicker too.

Unit failed almost immediately, was unable to drive 3" wood screws into fir 2X4's. Returned to local Makita warranty center, took 5 months to repair. The center then lost all my warranty papers, bills of sale, etc., and now I have no warranty at all. Unit still doesn't work (doesn't appear any repairs were made), and now no warranty. A VERY expensive lesson.

"Decent, but definitely not the best out there" 2010-02-16

Cons: (1) Not variable speed, (2) a bit heavy, (3) still relatively big compared to the competition

Overall, it looks to me like this impact wrench might be outdated compared with what's out there today. Most of today's cordless impacts are variable speed. You have MUCH better control with variable speed, especially when you are trying to put nuts back on. With this Makita wrench, soon as you hit the trigger, it goes full speed.

The wrench seems somewhat powerful, but I found a couple of (maybe frozen?) lugnuts this guy could not take off. It was on a '03 Corolla (I think using 21 mm nuts), which is not even close to a tank. I don't know if the car's lugnuts were put on by impact guns before at a shop, but I had no problems with any of the other lugnuts on that car.

My other gripe about this wrench is the size and weight. I did some specs comparisons of the latest cordless impacts out there today (i.e. Milwaukee 2663-22, IR W360P, and Craftsman c3 19.2 cordless impact wrench) and the Makita is the longest as well as heaviest of the bunch. When you read the Makita product description, they mention how the tool is compact and light. I'm guessing it's when comparing it to electric impact wrenches at the time the tool came out. Those electric impacts are much heavier and bigger. But now today's latest cordless impacts are more compact and lighter than this Makita. Check out the specs for the 3 other wrenches I had mentioned and see for yourself.

I actually got the Craftsman c3 19.2 impact wrench with the lithium ion batteries to try out and honestly, I like it much better than the Makita. It has variable speed, is smaller, lighter, much cheaper, and feels just as powerful as the Makita even though it only has a rating of 200 ft lbs of torque. I did some tests like tightening a lugnut to 150 ft lbs and trying both the Makita and Craftsman on it. Both wrenches zipped off the nut very easily. When removing a standard 80 ft lb torqued nut on my Honda Civic, it really seemed like the Craftsman zipped them off easier compared to the Makita. I don't know if they overstated the torque on the Makita or understated it on the Craftsman, but both wrenches seem just as powerful, however the Craftsman felt a bit stronger. Though that is just going by my observation and feeling, so there is no scientific facts or hard numbers to prove it. I don't know if this is because the Craftsman has a faster IPM (impacts per minute) compared with the Makita. Anyway, since I only need an impact gun for my cars at home (I'm never going to working on big machinery), the Craftsman seems plenty powerful enough for me.

I will say the Makita LXT series has good batteries and chargers so if you already have an investment in them, maybe you have no choice but to go with this tool if you need something with more torque. I ended up returning the tool because of the cons, but I'm hoping Makita is working on some next generation high torque cordless impact that will address all the shortfalls I mentioned. As of now, I am sticking with the Craftsman I bought.

I bought this to replace my Dewalt heavy duty impact wrench 18v XRP set. I got sick and tired of everytime I needed it - the batteries were dead. Right from the start I have been extremely impressed with this tool, the power is great, I have been working on vehicles and farm equipment for more then 40 years - I used this to remove the 2 1/2" blade holding nuts from a large bush hog - rusted and pacted with debris, it is hard to believe how fast and efficient this tool is. It is stronger then my previous air impact wrenches and much handier out in the field. Too bad I cannot give it more then 5 stars because it deserves it. With the 18v makita lithium ion batteries - it is always ready to go - even months after the last time it was charged.

I've only used this a few times as I only received it a month or so ago, but so far I am impressed. It's not a light weight tool. In fact it seems to be built like a tank. But it is well balanced and fairly easy to use with one hand. It has plenty of torque, and the toggle power switch is easy to use, although it may take a little getting used to. I guarantee you will run it the reverse direction of what you want once or twice till you get used to it.

"Good Tool; Good Value" 2009-09-20

I bought this tool primarily for use when I didn't have access to air for my normal impact tools. I have used it in several different scenarios and it hasn't let me down yet. With it's ~148 lb/ft of torque, it is a very powerful tool for it's size and weight. I have used it for several things from automotive work and general shop work to removing and installing mower blades on a lawn tractor. Don't make a common mistake though. This is not a heavy duty impact. But for it's intended use and torque capacity, it is a good tool. I do like also the switchable power level. Not all jobs require maximum torque. I do wish it was a 3/8 inch square drive instead of 1/2 inch. I am most impressed by the light weight afforded by the lithium batteries. The same tool with Ni-cads would probably weigh twice as much or more. The impact is a good compact size also which makes it nice to use in some tight spots where a normal size 1/2" air impact would not fit. The included case, spare battery and Smart Charger (My words, not theirs) are very nice also. For me, this tool is a good value.

Very good compact impact. Worked great swapping sway bar endlinks. Even takes lug nuts off of my pickup truck. Lightweight, compact, and the LED is useful (stays on for a few moments after the trigger is released, VERY small but nice feature).

Have not used the SDS - just got this combo because the impact alone was more costly.

"Product was defective TWICE!" 2010-07-01

I ordered the Makita based on reviews I had read on Amazon as well as other places and decided to buy as I wanted a lightweight drill and impact driver. I also ordered the Makita 62 piece drill bit set, mainly because it had spade bits in a hex bit that I really needed anyway. The drill/driver was defective since it wouldn't accept about half the bits.

The impact driver wouldn't lock in any either. So off to my neighbors house and he has a Dewalt and a Ryobi and a few other impacts and drills that he uses daily, the makita bits some would fit in his stuff others no. Ok so return the bits right? Ok done, and a new set came promptly. Now all the bits would fit in the impact driver but about 40% wouldn't fit in the drill driver. Back to my neighbor and we again tried out the bits.

Ok all the new bits fit in all of his 1/4" hex stuff and in my impact driver but about 40% wouldn't fit in the drill driver.

Hair pulling time! So we figured out the collet on the makita must be defective, since his well used bits didn't fit either, some did others, no.

Returned the Makita set to Amazon and they promptly shipped me out a new set, well even less bits would fit in the drill/driver from that set!

The Impact driver had no problem with any of the bits.

So I returned the set as defective and have ordered a Milwaukee M18 set which was on sale for $40 more. But only the impact driver has a 1/4" hex drive. That drill/driver has a 3/8" or 1/2" keyless chuck.

For about 35 years I've owned Makita (teal) products and really never thought about other brands. But these new white makita drills make me wonder how well they are built. I've never had 2 defective items in a row like that before and not one defective makita anything.

Maybe it's just a bad batch?

I will add that the drills and bits that did fit wobbled like crazy.

I'd suggest staying clear of Makita until they improve their quality control.

"Great Drill and Driver w/Caveat" 2010-06-22

I recently purchased this set for home workshop light to medium use, for which it is great. I doubt that you would want to use these on a construction site, though; the batteries wouldn't last long enough and the drill/driver may not have enough torque for all jobs.

While I've had a 19.2V Craftsman drill for a number of years, this is my first driver. Wow, what an improvement for driving screws; the hammer mode means I can use the driver with one hand with ease and the bit stays in the screw rather than struggling with two hands and still getting stripped out screw heads.

Even though these are physically small with small batteries, they still offer plenty of power. I haven't done an extensive test to see where I run out of torque; however, I was able to sink a 2" deck screw about a 1/4" below the surface of a pressure treated 4X4 with the driver and drill several 3/4" holes in 2X pressure treated lumber with an old spade bit. The compact size has already come in handy replacing some window blinds where the screws were too close to the wall for my large drill but no problem for the small driver.

The batteries charge fairly quickly using the included charger, perhaps 20-30 minutes from fully discharged. With moderate use with just one tool, you would probably be able to swap batteries btween the tool and the charger with little or no down time. If you're using both tools, take a break while you charge the batteries, you deserve it.

No drill chuck is included, so you must either use a drill bit with a 1/4" hex shank on it or a separate chuck such as the "Hitachi 725405 3/8-Inch Keyless Conversion Chuck for 1/4-Inch Hex Impact Drivers".

I haven't used the tools where I needed the built-in lights, however, I know I will and will greatly appreciate them. Will save having to use a corded light or a flashlight in many cases where I just need a little just to drill or drive something.

The included case is pretty decent. It's lightweight, but seems fairly sturdy. It includes a little pocket where you can put a few loose bits. If you're not carrying the charger, you can carry a few extra things such as larger bit cases, packages of screws, etc.

I'm really glad that I bought this set before buying Makita's 18-volt tools. I definitely can benefit from the compact size for several planned projects and I have most if not all the torque that I will need for the vast majority of my tasks. I'll buy the heavier tools if and when I get into doing some heavier-duty construction-type projects.

"Drill is useless for drilling holes." 2010-06-21

I'll skip re-iterating all of the glowing comments (which are true) and just focus on the one glaring flaw with this combo kit. The Drill-Driver has so much wobble / play in the 1/4" hex drive that it is almost useless for actually drilling holes. Have tried and broken 2 (more expensive) hex style drill bits with it using only moderate pressure and was never able to accurately drill any holes with this turkey. Either the hex drive on the drill needs to be brought up to spec, or the DF330DW drill needs to be substituted into this kit for both tools to be fully useful.

I had purchased my husband the 14.4 set several years ago but it was a little large for me; to get the battery out is very difficult on 14.4 tools. (it's two wide to grip it)

So.... this was my Mother's Day gift. I love it. I guess the only thing that would make it better is if the drill had a regular chuck to use all drill bits not just the hex shank.

"Great drills, what's with the case?" 2010-05-30

These little beauties are everything the others say they are. Incredibly small, powerful, and seemingly well built. Steel gear transmissions tell me they are not toys. I traded up my Ridgid R82007 drill which didn't have the torque I desired or the speed (the problem with a single speed transmission). I have to laugh when my buddy pulls out his 18V Dewalt impact drill that weighs 4x more to do the light duty work. Drilling hundreds of holes in drywall gets tedious and tiresome with a chunky beast like that.

I have to say that I was surprised when I opened the attractive (albeit cheap) case I was surprised to find the contents just lying in a heap. There is nothing in there, other than a single piece of dense foam with a few cut outs, to keep the drills securely in place. It's really strange for a kit this expensive. At least there is room in there to shove a boxes of bits and the adjustable speed chuck I also bought so I can still use my large set of non-hex drill bits, also purchased on Amazon. Still, it's pretty superficial and not at all a knock on the drills themselves, so I still give 5 stars.
